Vibration-induced granular segregation: a phenomenon driven by three mechanisms.
The segregation of large spheres in a granular bed under vertical vibrations is studied. In our experiments, we systematically measure rise times as a function of density, diameter, and depth, for two different sinusoidal excitations. The measurements reveal that, at low frequencies, inertia and convection are the only mechanisms behind segregation. Inertia (convection) dominates when the relat...
متن کاملBoiling crisis as a critical phenomenon.
We present the first experimental study of intermittency and avalanche distribution during a boiling crisis. To understand the emergence of power law statistics we propose a simple spin model capturing the measured critical exponent. The model suggests that behind the critical heat flux is a percolation phenomenon involving drying-rewetting competition close to the hot surface.
متن کاملMechanism for granular segregation.
A process is described that produces horizontal size segregation in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. The behavior is a consequence of two distinct phenomena that are unique to excited granular media: vibration, which causes the large particles to rise to the top of the layer, and a vibrating base with a sawtooth surface profile, which can produce stratified flows in opposite di...
متن کاملPredicting polydisperse granular segregation
Most granular materials in industrial applications and natural settings are size-polydisperse, but most models and simulations of segregation consider only bidisperse particle distributions. Here, we extend our recently developed theoretical advection–diffusion–segregation model to polydisperse particle distributions. To test the theoretical approach, we model and simulate grains log-normally d...
متن کاملGranular Temperature under Segregation in a Vibrated Granular Bed
The dominant mechanism affecting the flow behavior of granular materials is the random motions of particles resulted from the interactive collisions between particles. The velocity fluctuations induce the segregation in granular flows. The different physical properties of granular material were used to investigate the segregation in a vibrated granular bed in this paper. The image processing te...
